3D Printer Lamp Shade Online: Design a Light Fixture Without CAD

A lamp shade is one of the most rewarding things to print at home: the part carries no mechanical load, forgives print artifacts, and light passing through the wall masks small layer lines on its own, turning them into texture. Buying a shade that actually fits your socket, height, and interior style, though, is almost always harder than it sounds — wrong diameter, wrong shape, or it costs as much as a whole fixture.

I built a free lamp shade generator — the lamp shade designer — that assembles a 3D surface-of-revolution model right in the browser and hands you a print-ready STL or 3MF. No CAD install, no sign-up, no limit on how many models you generate.

What you can configure

The tool builds a shade step by step, not as one form with a dozen fields at once:

  • Silhouette — drum, cone, dome, bulb, faceted, or a custom profile.
  • Cross-section — circle, oval, polygon, or custom.
  • Wall texture — smooth, ribs, basket weave, wave, pleats (sharp accordion folds), or a fuzzy texture.
  • Inner diffuser — a separate nested surface that softens the light more than a bare bulb shining through the wall.
  • Socket — E26 or E12, matched to your bulb base.
  • Top — vented (for heat dissipation) or solid.

The first step offers ready-made presets — pre-assembled combinations like a pleated cone or a faceted spiral — so you see an eye-catching result right away instead of blindly turning eight sliders and guessing what comes out.

Why this isn't a thin-walled vase-mode model

Many similar generators online (like Jonas Wagner's well-known sandbox) print the shade in slicer vase mode — a single nozzle-width wall, no perimeters or infill. That's fast, but fragile, and it doesn't let you build a proper top or socket housing.

My designer builds real two-walled geometry with an actual wall thickness you set yourself, instead of relying on slicer settings — the model prints with ordinary, non-vase-mode profiles and holds its shape on its own, regardless of how a particular slicer is configured.

Which plastic to use

For a shade over an incandescent or halogen bulb, what matters isn't brightness — it's not yellowing from heat and not warping near a hot socket. PETG is the standard choice: translucent, diffuses light more softly than ABS, and resists yellowing under constant heat better. For outdoor or humid use, the designer has a separate "outdoor" mode with a material tip suited to those conditions.

If you're using a modern LED bulb, it barely heats up, and the plastic choice is driven by light diffusion rather than heat resistance: too dense an opaque plastic just won't let light through the wall texture, while too thin a wall lets you see the bulb's filament itself as a bright point.

How to get the file

  1. Open the lamp shade designer — it works instantly, no install.
  2. Pick a ready preset, or build a silhouette and cross-section from scratch.
  3. Set the wall texture, and optionally the diffuser and socket.
  4. Check the size — the tool automatically caps the model at 255 mm on any axis and scales it to fit a standard desktop printer's build volume.
  5. Download the STL or 3MF and print.

The model is already correctly oriented and needs no extra slicer prep — just pick your material and print profile.
