Most pricing mistakes in 3D printing come down to one root cause: pricing like a hobbyist who happens to be taking payment, instead of pricing like a business. The two produce wildly different numbers for the exact same print — and the gap is usually invisible until months of orders later, when it turns out the "profitable" side hustle barely covered its own electricity bill.

The hobbyist mindset vs. the business mindset

The hobbyist mindset prices a print at roughly filament cost plus a bit extra — "it only cost me $3 in PLA, so $8 feels generous." The business mindset prices a print at filament cost plus machine time, plus labor, plus a share of overhead — because a printer sitting there for 9 hours is real cost even though nothing gets "consumed" in a way that shows up on a receipt.

The hobbyist number ignores that the printer itself is aging, that electricity was drawn the whole time, and that someone had to design or set up the file, start the print, and eventually handle a customer message. None of that is free — it's just not a physical thing you can point to, so it's easy to price as if it doesn't exist.

What a print actually costs

A defensible price separates at least these components instead of collapsing them into "material plus vibes":

  • Material — filament or resin actually consumed by the part.
  • Machine time — depreciation and electricity for every hour the printer is occupied, whether or not it needed supervision.
  • Labor — actual human time: design/modeling, slicing and setup, post-processing, packaging, and customer communication, priced at an hourly rate separate from machine time.
  • Overhead and margin — a share of fixed costs (space, software, failed prints) plus the profit that makes doing this worthwhile at all.

One widely-cited reference point for desktop FDM machine time alone (not including labor) is roughly $2-4 per hour — treat that as one data point from the broader market, not a rule, since local costs, machine class, and what "machine time" is bundled with vary a lot. Design or setup labor is usually priced separately and at a materially higher hourly rate than machine time, because it's a person's skill and attention, not a machine idling.

The gross margin trap

Gross margin — price minus material cost — looks great on a print that costs $3 in filament and sells for $25. It's the number most new sellers mentally track, and it's also the number that lies. Net margin, after machine depreciation, electricity, marketplace or payment fees, packaging, shipping, failed prints, and the actual hours spent on setup and communication, is routinely much lower than that gross number suggests. Sellers who price off gross margin alone are often surprised later — not by any single cost, but by how many small ones stack up between "price charged" and "money actually kept."

Pricing without the guesswork

The fix isn't a more optimistic markup — it's itemizing the components separately so nothing gets absorbed into a single filament-cost multiplier.
