LCD Printer Maintenance: FEP Film, Vat, and Screen — Costs People Forget
Unlike FDM, where mostly the nozzle wears out, an LCD/MSLA printer wears out several parts at once — and if you don't cost them separately, resin printing ends up underpriced on a cost line that only shows up after a few months of use.
What wears out

Why it's its own cost line
FEP film tears or clouds over sooner than you'd expect at the start: aggressive resins (especially filled ones — castable, some tough resins) shorten its life faster than standard resin does. The LCD screen costs noticeably more than the film and lasts longer, but it's finite too — and replacing it on newer models can cost close to a chunk of the printer's own price.
How to cost it
- Film: the price of a film kit divided by the average number of prints before replacement gives a cost per print — small, but present on every single piece.
- Screen: the screen's price divided by its lifetime in hours gives a cost per hour of exposure — costed the same way as printer depreciation, as its own line item.
- Vat cleaning and small supplies (scrapers, gloves, wipes) — a small but constant cost worth pricing into a batch, not writing off as "negligible."
How it affects cost
If you cost only resin and printer depreciation, print cost looks lower than it really is — the real cost of FEP film and gradual screen wear shows up months later, when it's time to replace them and nobody budgeted for it. Resin printing means accounting for at least four things, not two (resin + printer): resin, printer depreciation, film lifetime, and screen lifetime. Skipping either of the last two doesn't show up immediately, but it regularly eats into a shop's margin at the next scheduled replacement.
