Margin vs. Markup in 3D Printing: Why a 30% Markup Isn't 30% Profit

"I add 30% on top of cost, so I'm earning 30%" is a line of reasoning almost everyone who starts printing for sale runs into, and it's mathematically wrong. Markup and margin are two different numbers calculated from two different bases, and the gap between them on real amounts is bigger than it first looks.
What's the difference
Markup is the percentage added on top of cost. Cost is 1,000 rubles, markup is 30% — the price is 1,300 rubles.
Margin is the percentage of profit relative to the selling price, not the cost. For that same part sold at 1,300 rubles with a cost of 1,000 rubles, the profit is 300 rubles, and the margin is 300 / 1,300 = 23%, not 30%.
The difference is small at a modest markup, but the higher the markup gets, the further the two numbers diverge: a 100% markup (price twice the cost) gives a margin of only 50%, not 100%. A 300% markup is a 75% margin, not 300%. The numbers look similar but represent very different shares of revenue that actually end up in your pocket.
Why this isn't just theory
The confusion becomes a real problem in two situations:
- When comparing to another business. If a competitor says "I run a 40% margin" and a maker is calculating their own 40% as a markup, their real profitability is noticeably lower than the comparison makes it look.
- When planning. If you budget assuming "a 50% markup means I keep half the price," the real profit (margin) turns out to be around 33% — and that gap between expectation and what actually lands in the account is usually exactly where the feeling of "I'm working a lot but not making more money" comes from.
How to calculate this without getting confused
The simplest rule to keep in mind: markup is calculated from cost, margin is calculated from selling price. The formula to convert markup to margin:
Margin = Markup / (100% + Markup)
50% markup → 33% margin. 100% markup → 50% margin. 200% markup → 67% margin.
And the other way around, if you have a target margin and need to figure out what markup to apply:
Markup = Margin / (100% − Margin)
A target margin of 40% → you need a 67% markup, not 40%.
What this means for real pricing
If the goal is a concrete profit figure at the end of the month rather than an abstract markup percentage, it's more useful to stop thinking in markup percentages altogether and instead set a target margin, then calculate the markup needed to hit it — that way there's less chance of accidentally underpricing while thinking you're building in more profit than you actually are.

Markup and margin aren't synonyms, and the gap between them grows along with the markup itself. Before comparing your profitability to someone else's or planning monthly income, make sure both numbers are calculated from the same base — otherwise it's easy to overestimate how much actually ends up in your pocket after each order.
