3D Printing Pricing Models Compared: By Weight, By Time, or Hybrid
Ask ten people running a 3D printing side business how they price prints, and you'll likely get three different answers: by weight, by print time, or some blend of both. Each one is a shortcut around doing the full cost breakdown every single time — and each has a specific failure mode worth knowing before you pick one.
Pricing by weight
The simplest, most common model: set a price per gram of material, multiply by part weight, done.
Works well when: your prints are broadly similar in geometry and infill, and material really is the dominant cost driver — small, dense, simple parts on a printer that isn't a huge chunk of your overhead.
Breaks down when: two parts have identical weight but wildly different print times. A tall, thin vase-mode print and a small, dense bracket can weigh the same and cost the same materially, but the vase might tie up the printer for 10 hours versus 1 — and per-hour costs (depreciation, electricity, your attention) don't show up anywhere in a pure per-gram price. Price by weight alone and slow, low-material prints quietly become loss leaders.
Pricing by time
The other common shortcut: charge a flat rate per hour of print time, sometimes with a small material pass-through.
Works well when: your printer time genuinely is the constrained resource — you're turning down work because the printer is busy, not because you're out of filament — and prints vary a lot in duration but not much in material cost.
Breaks down when: material cost swings a lot between jobs. A print in a $15/kg PETG and the same print in a $60/kg specialty resin or engineering filament take the same time but have very different material costs — a pure per-hour rate either overcharges the cheap job or undercharges the expensive one.
Hybrid: weight + time + depreciation

Cost = material (by weight) + electricity (by time) + depreciation (by time)
This is more arithmetic than either shortcut, which is exactly why people reach for the shortcuts in the first place — but it's the only version that doesn't silently distort pricing when either weight or time swings independently. Practical takeaway
If your catalog is narrow (similar parts, similar filament, similar run times), a weight- or time-based shortcut is a reasonable approximation and simpler to communicate to customers as a flat rate. The wider your catalog gets — multiple materials, wildly different geometries, mixed FDM/resin work — the more a shortcut starts systematically over- or under-pricing some subset of your work, usually without you noticing until margins don't add up at the end of the month.
