Bulk 3D Printing Orders: How to Price a Batch of 50+ Parts
Sooner or later, instead of "can you print me one figurine," you get asked for 50, 100, or 200 identical pieces — for an event, for resale, as a batch for a marketplace listing. The excitement of landing a big order quickly gives way to a harder question: how do you actually price this? Multiplying the cost of one part by the quantity isn't quite right, because a batch saves money in one place and costs more in another.
How a batch differs from a single part
Material and electricity scale linearly — 50 parts consume exactly 50 times the plastic and kilowatt-hours of one, no savings there and none to expect. What a batch actually saves you on is setup.
Every print run takes operator time: leveling the bed, dialing in the first layer, checking the nozzle, swapping the spool if needed. That time doesn't depend on whether one part or several are printing at once on the same plate — it's spent once per print cycle, not once per finished piece.
Setup savings = setup cost × (1 − 1 / parts per print cycle)
Example
Bed leveling and first-layer setup take 20 minutes of labor, valued at 500 RUB/hour — so one setup costs about 167 RUB. Printing one part at a time, that 167 RUB lands on each piece in full. If the print bed fits 4 identical parts per cycle, the setup is the same but split four ways — 42 RUB per part instead of 167 RUB.
Savings per part = 167 − 42 = 125 RUB
On a batch of 50, that's already over 6,000 RUB in real savings — and that figure, not a gut feeling, is what a volume discount should be built from.
Risk scales too
The flip side of a batch: if a mistake in the model, slicer settings, or calibration doesn't show up right away but partway through the run, it's not one part at risk — it's the whole print run. Layer separation, shifted layers, dimensions off from what was specified — on a single part that's an annoying redo; on a batch of 100, it's lost material and time across the entire order.
Make it a habit: before starting the full run, always print one test piece first — same settings, same material, same orientation on the bed. Only once it checks out (dimensions, strength, surface quality) does the full batch go ahead. The time and material for the test piece belong in the order's price as their own line item, not written off as a loss.
It's also worth accounting for the fact that a nozzle wears down noticeably faster on a large run than on a one-off print, especially with abrasive filament. On a big enough batch, it's sensible to budget for a possible mid-run nozzle swap rather than assuming the same nozzle will make it through the whole thing without issue.
How to negotiate a discount without eating your margin
The logic is simple: a volume discount should reflect real setup savings, not be an arbitrary goodwill gesture toward the client. A rough scale to start from:

The exact percentages depend on how many parts actually fit on your bed per cycle and how much setup time that saves you in practice — the scale shows the order of magnitude, not a universal formula. If setup savings amount to no more than 3% of the batch's cost, and the client is asking for 15% off, it's not worth agreeing — that's no longer a "volume discount," it's working at a loss dressed up as a good deal.
What not to agree to
A big order looks attractive, but two conditions can turn it into a problem:
- Unrealistic deadlines. Machine print time scales linearly with quantity — unlike setup, it isn't saved at all on a batch. 50 parts at 8 hours of print time each is 400 hours of machine time, and even running several printers in parallel, that's days, not hours. Before agreeing to a deadline, honestly work out how many hours the printers actually need to be tied up, and build in slack for defects and unforeseen pauses.
- No deposit, payment on delivery only. Material for a large run is often bought upfront and in a quantity that isn't always usable on other orders if the client changes their mind or delays payment. What this means in practice
A batch of 50-plus isn't "the same print, just bigger" — it's a separate calculation: part of the cost (setup) genuinely drops with volume, while another part (material, machine time, risk of defects) scales linearly or faster. When the volume discount is built from actual savings instead of pulled out of thin air, a big order delivers predictable profit — instead of printers tied up for a week and a final total that barely covers the plastic.
