Matte PLA: density, print temperature and when to choose it
Matte PLA is PLA with additives (often mineral fillers like talc or chalk) that scatter light on the surface and visually "smooth out" layer lines. Unlike Silk PLA it solves the opposite problem: killing the shine so the print looks like it was cast from matte plastic or plaster.

When to use it
- Figurines, architectural models, prototypes — anywhere you want to hide layer lines without post-processing or paint.
- Products for photography and presentations — the matte surface doesn't glare under studio lighting.
- Models imitating plaster, ceramics, or stone.
When to pick something else
- You need maximum flexural strength — mineral fillers usually reduce impact resistance slightly compared to plain PLA; for loaded parts, PLA+ or PLA Tough is better.
- You want a glossy, "premium" look — go with Silk PLA.
- You're printing a functional part where appearance is secondary — plain PLA is cheaper and gives the same strength.
Pros and cons
Pros: hides layer lines and small print defects without sanding, doesn't glare on photo or video, prints almost as easily as plain PLA.
Cons: mineral additives slightly reduce impact resistance, costs more than base PLA, the color palette is usually narrower than for plain PLA.

How it affects your print cost
