PVA: density, print temperature and when to use it as a support material
PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) is a material soluble in plain water, printed on a second extruder (or through an AMS/multi-material unit) as a support for PLA models with complex geometry — after printing, the part is simply soaked in water and the supports dissolve away without a trace and without mechanical cleanup.

When to use it
- Supports for PLA models with internal channels/cavities that can't be reached after printing (e.g. multi-material printing on AMS-compatible printers).
- Complex geometry with overhangs, where standard breakaway supports would mar the part's surface.
- Prototypes with moving joints printed already assembled (the support between parts dissolves, leaving parts that move freely).
When to pick something else
- Printing without a second extruder/AMS — printing PVA as a standalone material for its own sake makes no sense; it's purely an auxiliary material.
- The support is needed for ABS, not PLA — PVA dissolves in water but is poorly matched by print temperature to ABS; for ABS, HIPS (dissolved in limonene) is usually used.
- The spool has been open without an airtight bag for more than a couple of days — PVA is extremely hygroscopic, absorbing moisture from the air faster than almost any other filament, and starts bubbling while printing.
Pros and cons
Pros: dissolves in plain water with no chemicals, leaves no trace on the part, enables geometry that's out of reach for standard supports.
Cons: extremely hygroscopic — degrades within hours without airtight storage/a dryer; more expensive than base materials; dissolving takes hours (better in warm water with gentle agitation).

How it affects your print cost
Like HIPS, PVA is almost always used together with a main material (usually PLA) — budget the consumption of both materials and post-processing time (soaking), rather than treating PVA as a standalone print "product." Because of its high hygroscopicity, store the spool in an airtight container with desiccant — a moisture-ruined PVA spool is a common cause of defects in multi-material printing.
