TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is the softest and most affordable of the common flexible filaments, a variant most often sold under the Ninjaflex brand and similar names. It's softer and cheaper than TPU, but noticeably trails it in wear resistance and springback after repeated deformation — TPE suits one-off flexible parts better than loaded functional assemblies.

The key practical setting is print speed: TPE is printed slowly (20–35 mm/s), otherwise the filament buckles in a bowden tube, twists in the feed mechanism, or jams — especially on printers without a direct-drive extruder.

When to use it

  • One-off flexible parts: covers, gaskets, cushioning inserts, where industrial-grade durability isn't needed.
  • Educational and demonstration models of flexible printing — TPE forgives setup mistakes better than the fussier TPU.
  • Budget-constrained projects where softness to the touch matters more than the part's service life.
  • Soft overlays for handles and grips under light mechanical load.

When to pick something else

  • The part will flex or rub often — take TPU: it's stronger, more abrasion-resistant, and holds shape longer under cyclic loads.
  • You need oil and fuel resistance — TPA is a better fit, with higher chemical and abrasion resistance.
  • You need a rigid semi-flexible part that keeps its geometry under load — look at TPC, which is noticeably stiffer and more heat-resistant than TPE.

Pros and cons

Pros: the lowest price among flexible filaments, a pleasant softness, prints on most printers with a direct extruder without modification, good bed adhesion.

Cons: lower wear resistance and springback than TPU/TPA, needs slow printing, poorly compatible with bowden extruders, holds precise dimensions on small parts worse.

How it affects your print cost

Slow print speed is the main cost driver for TPE: the same part prints 2–3 times longer than in PLA, directly increasing machine time and its share of the calculation. The material itself is inexpensive, so the part's final price is mostly determined by time rather than filament consumption — budget a higher defect rate while you're still dialing in your first print profile settings.
