PLA Food Safe: density, print temperature and when to choose it
PLA Food Safe is PLA whose feedstock is certified to food-contact standards (FDA, EU 10/2011, or equivalent). An important nuance: the certificate confirms the raw pellet's safety, not the finished printed part. FDM printing always leaves microscopic pores between layers where moisture and bacteria can collect — so a printed item, strictly speaking, is not a reusable food container even if the filament is fully certified.

When to use it
- Molds for single-use or occasional contact with dry foods (cookies, candy), given fully dry application with no extended storage.
- Prototypes of dishware and kitchen accessories before moving to injection molding or another final process.
- Products where the "certified feedstock" claim itself matters for marketing or customer requirements — with an understanding of FDM printing's limitations.
When to pick something else
- You need a container for long-term storage of moist food or dishware for repeated washing — printed PLA layers trap moisture and bacteria regardless of certification; the only fix is a food-safe epoxy coating afterward, or switching to injection molding.
- The item will contact food hotter than 55–60°C — PLA (including Food Safe) softens; you need heat-resistant, food-safe PETG or PP.
- You need a soft food-contact gasket or seal — consider food-safe grades of TPU.
Pros and cons
Pros: certified feedstock removes questions about material composition, prints just as easily as plain PLA, suitable for brief dry contact with food.
Cons: the certificate doesn't extend to the finished printed part due to layer porosity, ongoing moisture contact requires an added coating (food-safe epoxy), costs more than plain PLA without genuinely expanding its use cases.

How it affects your print cost
The certified-feedstock premium (usually 15–30% over plain PLA) pays off only if the customer cares specifically about the pellet's certification. If the item actually contacts moist food, add a food-safe epoxy post-processing coat to the budget — without it, no PLA, Food Safe included, gives the finished part full food safety.
