Castable Resin: density, exposure and when to choose it
Castable Resin exists for one job — investment casting. The model is printed from this resin, embedded in a flask with investment plaster, then burned out in a kiln: the resin must burn away almost without residue, leaving no ash that would ruin the mold. This makes it a key material in jewelry manufacturing and dental casting of crowns and frameworks.

When to use it

- Fine mechanics and parts whose final version must be metal, not resin.
- Prototyping jewelry lines before a production run.
When to pick something else
- The final item will itself be plastic, not metal — casting isn't needed; use Standard Resin or ABS-like Resin for the finished part.

Pros and cons
Pros: minimal ash on burnout — doesn't clog the mold, high detail for fine jewelry elements, predictable behavior in the kiln under standard burnout schedules.
Cons: more expensive than most other resins per liter, narrowly specialized — useless outside the casting process, requires precise adherence to the kiln's temperature schedule, brittle before firing, which complicates transporting models.

Castable Resin is one of the most expensive resins per liter, and that's justified by its narrow niche and clean burnout. Casting cost calculations need to include not just the resin itself but the whole downstream cycle: investment plaster, kiln operating time (energy and warm-up on schedule), and the metal for the actual casting. A defective model at the print stage means more than a reprint — it also means a lost flask and kiln cycle, so it's especially important to budget a buffer for failed attempts into the finished item's price.
