Silk PLA: density, print temperature and when to choose it
Silk PLA is PLA with additives (usually metallized or high-molecular-weight modifiers) that give a pronounced silky, almost pearlescent gloss instead of plain PLA's matte surface. Dual-color and tri-color silk filaments are sold under the same name too (a gradient between two or three colors along the strand's length) — the base and print characteristics are the same, so it doesn't need a separate article.

When to use it
- Decorative models, vases, statuettes, jewelry elements — where the visual effect of gloss and sheen matters.
- Gift and display items, where the pearlescent shine works as a standalone "feature" with no painting needed.
- Dual/tri-color spools — for models with a smooth color gradient without manually swapping filament.
When to pick something else
- You need strength or functionality rather than looks — Silk PLA is usually more brittle and prone to stringing; for loaded parts, PLA+ or PLA Tough is better.
- Printing small parts with thin walls — the glossy additives increase the tendency to ooze and string; matte Matte PLA or plain PLA is better on complex geometry.
- A matte, non-glare surface matters for photography or scanning — take Matte PLA.
Pros and cons
Pros: a striking glossy or pearlescent look with no paint, dual/tri-color variants give a ready-made gradient, prints on the same printers with no extruder changes.
Cons: more prone to stringing and oozing, needs more precise retraction and cooling tuning, less impact-resistant than plain PLA from many brands.

How it affects your print cost
Silk PLA usually costs 10–25% more than plain PLA, and its higher tendency to string increases post-processing time (removing strings) and the defect rate on small parts — budget a bit more time for printing and manual cleanup, especially on your first spools before you've dialed in settings for a specific brand.
